EWA-BELT at the webinar "Combating desertification: success stories from across the African continent"

June 20, 2024 on Zoom (12 - 3 pm CEST). To celebrate the 30th anniversary of UNCCD, the Desertification Research Centre – NRD and DesertNet International are pleased to present the event "Combating desertification: success stories from across the African continent".


On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the Desertification Research Centre (NRD) of the University of Sassari, Coordinator of the EWABELT Project, is organizing in collaboration with DesertNet International a Webinar on the theme "Combating desertification: success stories from across the African continent".

"The future of our land is at stake. Desertification, land degradation, and drought are among the most pressing environmental challenges of our time, with up to 40% of all land area worldwide already considered degraded" - (UNCCD)

Aknowledging to the urgency to operatively address such relevant issues, the event will gather a pool of eminent personalities and experts on the topic capable of highlighting the pressing challenges while aslo outlining some potential ways forward presenting a set of best practices, projects and endeavors advocating and working towards the same ends.


Among other instances, the EWA-BELT Project will be brought as exemplary cooperation and research effort in sub-Saharan Africa, with a particular focus on the ongoing research activities on cropping systems the partners of the Consortium are carrying out. Prof. Giovanna Seddaiu, Professor, NRD & University of Sassari, will intervene in the first session with a presentation on "Integrating traditional knowledge with innovative agricultural strategies in sub-Saharan cropping systems: the EWA-BELT experience". Prof. Quirico Migheli, Director NRD, and François Tapsoba, UNCCD Regional and Technical Advisor for West and Central Africa & Member of the EWA-BETL Scientific Advisory Board, will also contribute to the discussion.
