EWA-BELT collaborates with SUSTLIVES Project

Updated: Apr 15, 2022

The SUSTLIVES project aims to foster the transition towards sustainable and climate-resilient agricultural and food systems in Burkina Faso and Niger through the enhancement of the heritage of local crops and their income-generating value chain in the region of Burkina Faso and Niger, Sahel. The project will strengthen the research and innovation capacities of actors in the agricultural innovation and knowledge system on the value chains of neglected and underutilized crops in the countries concerned. SUSTLIVES is based on a comprehensive approach to protect and enhance agro-biodiversity, as well as a participatory and inclusive approach, gender and age sensitive.

During the next agricultural season in Burkina Faso, EWA-BELT, thanks to the coordination of ACRA will collaborate with the research project SUSTLIVES (SUSTaining and improving local crop patrimony in Burkina Faso and Niger for better LIVes and EcoSystems), funded by EU under the DeSIRA program. The Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) is the project coordinator, whereas the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies of Bari (CIHEAM Bari) is responsible for the scientific and technical management of the project..

In particular, EWA-BELT and SUSTLIVES will collaborate in the field of the multiplication and participatory selection of NUS. The species on which we have found a synergy in Burkina is the Vouandzou (Subterranean vine). Where possible EWA-BELT and SUSTLIVES would like to compare the same varieties and establish a common protocol to be able to compare the results.
