Save the date! JULY 31, 2024 on Zoom
from 1:00 pm (CEST) / 11 am (GMT - Sierra Leone time)
The third and final event of this cycle of webinars will focus on “Resource management optimization: two sides of the same coin - soil & water management in Sierra Leone”. On July 31, 2024 from 1:00 pm (CEST) / 11 am (GMT - Sierra Leone time), the Njala University and the University of Makeni, together with the University of Sassari, OCCAM - Observatory on Digital Communication and Foodscale Hub, will shed light on the research activities that are being carried out by the partners with respect to soil and water management.
In view of hunger levels rising in Africa due to food-insecurity issues, Covid-19, climate change emergencies and many other factors, the importance of resource management involving strategic planning, allocation, and utilization of various resources to ensure access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food for all individuals and communities represents a priority to be addressed urgently. To do so, both the EWA-BELT and INCiTiS-FOOD projects are advocating for innovative best practices in Sierra Leone with respect to sustainable soil and water management respectively, encompassing organic fertilization, agri-livestock combination, aquaponics and hydroponics solutions.
Towards the achievement of such ambitious objectives, partners in Sierra Leone have been testing and validating innovative approaches in the labs as well as on the field highlighting the relevance of a multi-sectoral and integrated approach that addresses the complex and interconnected drivers of food insecurity towards an enrichment of the current literature on resource management. In this respect, Dr Mohamed Joseph Sesay from the University of Makeni will present “Agri-Livestock Combination: The Potential for Soil and Crop Improvement Through Organic Fertilization” discussing the best practices implemented so far within the EWA-BELT Project on organic fertilization towards soil and crop improvement in the Region, also highlighting the importance of livestock management in the process. On the other side of the spectrum, Mr Samuel Gibril Jalloh will talk about “Aquaponics Solutions for Better Water Use and Management”, Miss Annmarie Bangura will give a presentation on “Black Soldier Fly for Composting, Animal Feed Production and Organic Manure Production”, while the topic of Prof. Olufemi Julius Olapade’s presentation will be ”Njala University Highlights”.
The panelists will showcase their presentations and open the floor for a discussion with the audience. The insights emerging from the webinar will be collected and reviewed to draft some recommendations and suggestions.
All those interested in participating are welcome to join the discussion. To do so, please fill in the following Form (https://forms.gle/Cpy3bBrBt7M8Ph2VA) to receive the link for the webinar.
